What is a “formal charge conference”?

In Texas, an informal charge conference is an off-the-record discussion in which the trial court judge and the parties discuss what should be contained in the jury charge. An informal charge conference is followed by a formal charge conference, which is on the record and is an opportunity for parties to formally lodge their objections to the jury charge which the judge will soon be giving the jury.
