What is an “original proceeding”?

In Texas, an original proceeding is an appellate case that is not an appeal. An original proceedings may be initiated by filing a petition for writ of mandamus, a petition for writ of prohibition, a petition for writ of injunction, or a petition for writ of quo warranto. See Texas Rule of Appellate Procedure 52.1.
