What is “stare decisis”?
“Stare decisis” is Latin and translates literally to “to stand by decided matters.” It is a legal principle by which courts are supposed to respect previous judicial decisions. It is pronounced STAR-ree (with the emphasis on the first syllable) de-SIGH-sis (with the emphasis on the second syllable).
