In Texas, what is a “final judgment”?

A final judgment is an order that, after which, there are no more parties or claims pending in the case. An interlocutory order is any order that is not a “final judgment.” Generally, only final judgments are appealable, but that the Texas Legislature has enacted statues permitting appeals of a handful of types of interlocutory orders. In some situations, a trial court is able to sign a “severance order” to sever the remaining pending claims into another cause of action, which could then allow the immediate appeal of the already-decided claims.
