What is a “headnote”?

Headnotes are summaries of the legal issues in an appellate opinion. They are not part of the opinion itself. Headnotes are written by editors at Thomson Reuters (and its predecessors West Publishing Company and Thomson West). Headnotes can be found with appellate opinions in the South Western Reporters and on Westlaw.
