What is an “amicus curiae brief”?

An amicus curiae brief, also known as an “amicus brief,” is an appellate brief filed by someone other than a party to the appeal. In an amicus brief, the non-party explains why the position taken by one of the parties should prevail. See Texas Rule of Appellate Procedure 11.
