What does “sitting by assignment” mean in a Texas appeal?

An appellate justice is “sitting by assignment” if he/she is not currently a justice on that appellate court. A retired justice from that court (or from another court) may be sitting by assignment on a Texas appellate court. A justice who is sitting by assignment is also known as a “visiting justice” and is informally referred to as a “visiting judge.”
