What is a “per curiam opinion”?

“Per curiam” is Latin and translates literally to “by the court.” A per curiam opinion does not identify any specific justice as being its author, but instead has the words “per curiam” where there would otherwise be a signature line for the opinion’s author. Per curiam opinions have traditionally been used to signify that the decision was an obvious one.
